ENThe life of Count Eustachy Tyszkiewicz was dedicated to the spread of knowledge about Lithuania's past. The discourse of his motto, "The Past for the Future", covers the count's activity in the fields of archaeology, regional ethnography, local history and historiosophy, as well as his organisational work at the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities and the Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission. Tyszkiewicz's views based on Szymon Dowkont (Simonas Daukantas, 1793-1864) idea of publishing the sources of Lithuanian history on an individual initiative, and the phenomenon of patronage, which was typical of that time, should be pointed out. Meanwhile, the paradigm of his museological and archaeographic activity - "the witnesses of the past", - aimed at an objective account of history, was determined by historical positivism. To present Lithuania's history objectively and to amass Lithuanian "national monuments" was the aim of the patronage of Tyszkiewicz and his associates. The patronage of the search, protection and spread of "Lithuanian antiquities" determined the structure of the collections of the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities and formed the possibilities of the archaeographic activity of the Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission. Tyszkiewicz's modus vivendi: "The Past for the Future" - the spread and patronage of the sources of Lithuanian history - is a significant phenomenon of Lithuanian history, which remains a relevant and worthy example until today.
