Vytautas Civinskis "Dienoraštyje" (1904-1910) apie Panevėžio kraštą

ENThis paper aims to present a document, created in 1904-1910, the diary of Vytautas Civinskis (1887-1910), which at present is stored in the Deposit of Vilnius University Library. This document may be as well classified as a source for history of Panevėžys region. While writing his diary, V. Civinskis studied at veterinary institutes in Germany and Tartu and spent most of his vacations in estates of Latavėnai and Mituva, situated near Anykščiai and near Skapiškis, both towns, culturally and by administrational law of that time belonging to Panevėžys area. The document itself is little known to the researchers, therefore this first attempt to analize its content is important. Some new facts connected to local noble families' genealogy, history of Lithuanian cultural renaissance in the very beginning of the twentieth century, the start of the amateur theater in the region are shown. Also the diary gives a good example of the polylingual situation, typical to that epoch, the mixture of the ideological influences coming from Russian, Polish, Lithuanian literatures and arts, German literature and philosophy. It is shown that the author of the diary deserves more attention in history of Lithuanian culture, because of his multiple activities (writing articles, participating in cultural societies, directing plays in local theater and beeing a keen photographer). The photographs illustrating the article are taken from the diary and, as far as known, are being published for the first time. [From the publication]
