ENExamining the past is usually based on written sources. However, a unique visual source is photography. Photographs pave the threads to the past period of time, enable the indirect access to people once lived, their environment, customs, fashion, feel what they were interested io their lives. This article deals with the photographs of six people involved ii^ Panevėžys town - teacher Pranciška Žalnieriūnaitė-Šadzevičienė (1910-1990), writer of feuilletons Liūne Janušytė (1909-1965), actor and director Juozas Miltinis (1907-1994), musician and teacher Mykolas Karka (1892-1984), writer, teacher and artist Matas Grigonis (1889-1971) and the author of the first Lithuanian photography textbook Juozas Kaminskas (1898-1957). It explores what memory of themselves they wanted to leave, what kind of image they tried to build in their portraits and group photos intended for memory, which moments they highlight in the photos of events or travels. Both the images and the captions on the pictures are the memories which help to better reflect the personality and provide a variety of infof mation about the times and the provisions prevailing at the time.
