ENLiudvikas Stašauskas (later Stanišauskas) was born in a poor peasant family in Butrimiškiai (Alytus district) in 1890. In 1918 the Lithuanian government made an appeal to the public to defend the country and started voluntary enlistment into the armed forces. In January 1919 Liudvikas Stanišauskas joined the First Infantry Regiment. In February Bolshevik regiment of 700 people was approaching Alytus and it launched an offensive on February 12. The author describes the defensive battle and the death of its commander Antanas Juozapavičius. Liudvikas Stanišauskas took part in the battle, what was the beginning of his military career. In 1919 he worked in Kalvarija Co- mendanture and later in Marijampolė Comendanture, thus took part in the struggles between Lithuanians and Poles in Seinai region. In December 1919 he was moved to Kaunas. In 1920 he was engaged in combat against the Polish troops in Augustavas, Lipsk and Seinai region. On September 4 he was taken prisoner, but soon he was released as a result of the exchange of hostages. He died because of pneumonia in October 1920. [From the publication]
