ENThe people in Sintautai area belong to Zanavykai, a West Aukštaitian Kaunas sub-dialect that is notable for being the closest to the standard language but retaining also some specific traits. Some of them indicate retention of older phonetic and morphologic features, while some syntax traits show influence of foreign languages. German language could affect the Sintautai parlance via regular contacts with the Germans of Lithuania Minor. The impact of Polish language seems to have been expressed through the Church that used Polish language in the 18th- 19th centuries. Salient phonetic features are singled out as follows: as all Kaunas dwellers the Sintautai people use specific accentuation of suffixes -enti, -inti in verb finitives and their forms; the accentuation differences are well pronounced in a following way: suffixes -aitė, -ybė, -ytis, -ytė are accentuated in acute way (tvir tagalė) according to the 2nd accentuation type; and derivatives of the suffix -aitė are acute, but the suffix -aitis is pronounced with falling accent (tvirtapradė). Main morphological peculiarities are distinguished as follows: the endings of inflectional parts of speech are prone to become shorter. A rather large group of lexis consists of ethnographic words with a rich semantic group of names of dishes. [From the publication]
