ENThe article deals with the viewpoint of the Lithuanian youth to their native dialect and standard language. It further identifies the places and situations in which they use either standard language or the dialect. The survey comprised the secondary learners, aged 15 tol8, and the pupils from the third year of gymnasium (middle school) in Punskas. It turns out that the majority of the respondents communicate in Lithuanian at home and with other people close to them. The Punskas dialect is predominantly used with family and friends. Standard Lithuanian dominates at school, be it in the classroom, during school celebrations, or in dealing with the teachers and guests from Lithuania. All written assignments are carried out in standard Lithuanian. The respondents declare that knowledge of both the dialect and the standard language is important to them. They perceive the standard language as important because of its communicative function (especially with regard to their future opportunities to study and work in Lithuania), prestige (correct use of the language is a sign of education and manners), and national duty. The respondents appreciate the dialect primarily as a linguistic heritage and a cultural element which unites the local community. The dialect is thought of as their mother tongue that is passed on from one generation to the next and thus kept alive. The dialect users also point to its expressive and appealing nature. The dialect allows for the ease and freedom of expression, providing the speakers with a certain pleasure. The dialect is therefore to be cultivated and treasured. [From the publication]
