ENThe attention of the researchers who look for the information about Yotvingians in 'Powieść minionych lat’ ('The Novel of the Past') is turned to the Russo-Byzantine peace treaty of 944. It contains a list of names of envoys representing Russia (the same as the treaty of 911). The majority of the names are mangled names of Scandinavian origin, as was proved by the Danish linguist Vilhelm Ludvig Peter Thomsen. The name of one envoy present in the document of 944 is Jawtiag Gunariew. The historians took the claims of his Yatvingian origin for granted. They usually agreed with the statement that Jawtiag Gunariew was of Yotvingian origin. However, even in the first half of the 19th century there were different opinions, willing to relate mysterious Jawtiag to the Germanic tribes. V.L.P. Thomsen was not able to reconstruct the original form of the name Jawtiag, however, the паше of his attorney translated properly as Gunnar (Gunnarr). The most similar name exists in Scandinavian Knytlinga saga - Jatvigr. The analysis of the Russo - Byzantine treaty of 944 proves that names Jawtiag and Gunnar have Scandinavian origin. People with those names were Scandinavians commonly occurring in Russia of that period and should not be related to Yotvingia. Thus, the first record of Russo - Yotvingian relations should be the document about the fighting in 983. [From the publication]
