ENThe present paper deals with the origins of the secondary noun case markers found in the Baltic languages, namely some of the locative case affixes in Latvian and Lithuanian. Their peculiarities and genesis have long been subject to discussions among the scholars, producing a considerable amount of literature to date. The objective of this paper is to briefly summarize data and views on the chronology of the origins and development of three local case markers in Lithuanian: adessive, allative and illative, and to re-analyse a well known typological parallel of secondary case forms in Tocharian for comparative analysis.
