ENThe interwar period was a difficult one in the Polish-Lithuanian relations. After the Polish occupation of Vilnius and the Vilnius region, Lithuania announced the precondition for any official communication between Lithuania and Poland. Lithuania wanted the return of the occupied territories. Since there was no official communication, the dialogue between both nations existed unofficially. The professor of Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Mykolas Biržiška, was in Poland from 25 January to 14 February, 1928. He had meetings mainly with the academic community in Warsaw and Krakow, but he was also received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs - August Zaleski, by the Minister of Education - Gustaw Dobrucki and by other Polish politicians. The impressions from the visit he described in the letters to his wife, who handed the letters over to the Lithuanian authorities. The content of the letters reveals the purpose of the visit: to learn the public feelings about the Lithuanian issue. Academic communities expressed willingness to cooperate with Lithuania.
