ENAntanas Karosas was the bishop of the Seinai diocese from 1910 until 1926, when the new province of the Catholic Church in Lithuania was established. In 1919 he was expelled from Seinai to Lithuania and settled down in Vilkaviškis. When the new diocese was organized he became its first bishop. In his pastoral work he emphasized the morality of the people and criticized drunkenness. He paid a lot of attention to the Christian education in the family and the respect for parents and older people. He understood the importance of school and religious education for children and young people. He was a modest, sensitive person who tried to avoid conflicts, even with the communist authorities of Lithuania. He took great care of all the issues he was involved in and he showed a respect for every human being. In his pastoral letters written during the war, he talked about the war as a great evil which wreaked havoc in the world. The bishop died on 7 July 1947. He is buried in the chapel of St. Anne’s in the Archangel Nicholas Church in Marijampolė. [From the publication]
