ENA number of Lithuanian linguists (K. Būga, A. Salys, J. Balčikonis, B. Savukynas, A. Vanagas, Z. Zinkevičius and others) collected and analysed the hydro names. Currently, there are 10,000 registered and described hydro names in Lithuania (including 7,000 names of lakes and 3,000 names of rivers). Hydro names of the Baltic origin go far beyond the current borders of Lithuania. The longest and the most important river of Sudovia is the Šešupė. It has its source near the village Szeszupka in the Suvalkai district and flows into the Nemunas near Tilsit. Its basin covers the area of over 6,000 km2 (950 km2 within the territory of Poland) and has more than 4,600 rivers and streams. At the source of the Šešupė, there is the legendary castle hill in Šiurpilis. Nearby, there are the deepest lake of Poland - Hańcza (108,5 - 113 m) and the second most beautiful river of Sudovia - the Black Hańcza. Analysing the etymology of the hydro names from the basins of the Black Hańcza and the Šešupė, the author goes back. [From the publication]
