ENFoursome evangelist’s statues restored - statues for some time were forgotten and newly discovered masterworks, preserved in church of Sts. Johns. Statues further destinies as well as other highly valuable statues were determined by the fact that they were literally brought to daylight. After many years in seclusion statues condition assessed and after that all of them went under meticulous process of restoration in P. Gudynas restoration center. Condition of evangelist’s statues before restoration was extremely poor. Due to high relative humidity in the church basement, polychrome was peeled off from the wooden base, as well as very fragile and easily to crumble away. In many places polychrome already crumbled away and wooden base was visible. Evangelist’s statues clothes were covered with gray, slightly glossy, but greatly darkened coating. We attempted to adjust it together with matt gray paint, the very same paint used on statues heads, hands, feet and back. Due to the high relative humidity, most of glued parts toppled, only some of them were saved. After scientific research it was revealed that the statues were decorated several times. Following results of scientific research it was decided only partially restore the statues polychromy, and leave untouched one of the survived patchy bottom layers. Foremost we strengthened brittle and crumbling parts of polychromy. Wooden based areas we thoroughly cleaned from dirtiness. The toes made of gesso were removed. Wooden statues in places with joined parts greatly loosened: hands, books, clothes. Small details newly made out of linden assembled with wooden plugs and installed into right the places. Restorative primer was made, adding yellow and brown pigments. It was decided to cover with it single layer, only were wooden base with polichromy permanently lost. Provided that newly made layer not in the same surface level as authentic polychromy and without use of retouch. Thus, primer layer coating in lost polichromy spots consolidated mechanically vulnerable authentic polychromy of statues. Decor acquired color integrity, which allowed admiring these amazing late Baroque wooden carving statues. [From the publication]
