ENThe variability of noun genders and stems in the Southern Aukstaitian dialect as well as the causes of their origins have not been thoroughly researched. However, these phenomena can undoubtedly help answer some questions about the development of certain cases of noun usage, noun declension system and the noun accentuation system closely related to it as well as the link of this subdialect to the neighbouring subdialects and Slavonic languages. When nouns arc described from the lexicographical point of view, there is usually no problem to attribute them to a certain stem or gender. Nevertheless, in some cases certain identification problems are encountered. This article deals with the variants of noun genders and stems as well as their presentation in the Dictionary of the Southern Subdialects of the Southern Aukstaitian. There are several parallel paradigms of the noun stem declension in the Southern subdialects of the Southern Aukstaitian that differ in their gender Category [...]. The questionable forms of this case are conditionally attributed to the main noun variant and are given in its dictionary entry The Southern subdialect of the Southern Aukstaitian has diverse variants of the same stem gender [...]. The main problem arises in describing them in terms of lexicography: when and on what grounds two (or more) different stem paradigms should be distinguished and when case forms should be considered parallel forms of one of such stems and they should be given in the same entry in the dictionary Three criteria are essential for both determining the noun gender and the stem variants: morphological, semantic and syntactical. The Dictionary of the Southern Subdialects of the Southern Aukstaitian was written on the basis of these three criteria. [From the publication]
