ENThis article analyses the types and compiling principles of the published Lithuanian dialectal dictionaries on the basis of descriptive and comparative methods. Eleven dialectal dictionaries are available today Dialectal dictionaries do not only provide almost the whole lexis of the dialect, but also reveal the peculiarities of word usage in the living language. The analysis of published dialectal dictionaries shows that the majority of these dictionaries are comprehensive dictionaries in order to show the entirety of lexis and the peculiar characteristics of the dialect on every linguistic level, whereas the compilation of differential dictionaries requires a complex selection of lexis, which differs from the standard language. Since dialects undergo a strong impact from the standard language, the problem of word selection is being solved with difficulties. Words written in conjunction with the living language or provided from other sources of the dialect are a huge treasure of the Lithuanian language, which is treated as an authentic cultural heritage today, hoping that each dialectal dictionary will be useful for both study and practice.
