ENLithuanians living in the Suvalkai region experienced the horrors of the World War II. On January 10, 1941 III Reich and the Soviet Union signed the pact on the strength of which the evictions of Lithuanians and Germans were started. Lithuanians from the Suvalkai region as well as the Klaipėda region had to move to Soviet Lithuania, while Germans moved to the Klaipėda region. The evictions had to be voluntary, however they turned into forced exodus of the indigenous residents of the territories. People were compelled to pack their things in their wagons and go into the unknown. 11955 people of the Lithuanian origin left the Suvalkai region through the set border crossings to Lithuania at the turn of February and March of 1941. That was the majority of the Lithuanians living in the region. The evicted people were quartered in former German farmsteads in south-western Lithuania. Germans started to come back to their farmsteads in 1942, therefore the Lithuanians were moved to other places, usually to the Vilnius region and were given former Polish farmsteads. The actions were of the political and settlement character. Since the front line moved towards the West in summer of 1944, Lithuanians from the Suvalkai region started to come back to their villages. New authorities were not eager to help those who returned; on the contrary, they hindered their legalization. 3000 people crossed the green boarder and decided to find their place in occupied Lithuania. According to the data of the Suvalkai district authorities, there were 656 abandoned farmsteads in 1946. The authorities did not want to legalize their owners. [From the publication]
