ENIn 2014-2015, during the archaeological investigation conducted on the site of the Vilnius lower Castle a polychromed wooden saddle was found. It has been dated to the 2nd half of the 13 c. and is the first such find in Lithuania. The unique artefact was thoroughly inspected before the conservation: X-ray and UV examination, material and polychrome component analysis were performed. Maple and lime woods were used for the saddle tree; decorative plates were made from animal bone and antler; and also iron nails were presented. Neither binder nor varnish of the polychrome was identified but the main pigments appeared to be arsenic and mercury sulphides, and some mixtures with white lead. The most challenging concern facing the conservator was to preserve the friable layers of polychrome painting on the waterlogged wood that had to be conserved with water soluble preservatives. Volatile cyclododecane was suggested for sealing the polychrome. Remaining layers of paint were covered by this material and the wood was consolidated using the cold poly(ethylene glycol) method. At present the wood conservation is almost finished and the layer of cyclododecane is in the process of slow evaporation. But it is already evident that remaining paint layers were preserved during the wood conservation process. [From the publication]
