ENThe author of the article presents briefly the origin of the Sudovian tribal society. It took two thousand years to form the Lithuanian nation. The Baltic tribes constructed their ethnicity in the Stone Age. Sudovians and Yotvingians formed the union which resulted in the appearance of a big tribal society. The Confederation experienced a lot of ethnic as well as territorial changes and upheavals. The author confirms that Sudovians and Yotvingians are not only the legacy of the past. They are still alive in their monuments of material and spiritual culture, which enriches the history and culture of the Lithuanian nation. The contemporary methods of scientific analyses in archaeology, palaeography, linguistics and other fields help in the determination of prehistoric roots of the Lithuanian nation. The roots lie in the Mesolithic, the Neolithic, and the period of Neman and Pamario cultures. The Baltic tribes originated from the Pamario culture. Rimutė Rimantienė, a well known archaeologist, claims that the separation of the Baltic tribes and the origination of the Western Balts began during the period of the Pamario culture. There are a number of prehistoric hydro names in the territories formerly inhabited by Sudovians which are important in the studies of linguistics and the genesis of nations. The author tries to present the historical sources referring to Sudovia. He also discusses the origin of the name ‘Sudovia’ and its interpretations in several sources during different historical periods. The Lithuanian nation did not lose its ethnicity, language and culture even in difficult and complicated historical periods. It was possible to restore its sovereignty at the beginning of the 20th century. [From the publication]
