ENWhen the Ecclesiastical Province of Lithuania was founded in 1926 by a special document of Pope Pius XI - bull Lituanorumgerne- the Kaišiadorys bishopric was established. To mark its 80'" anniversary a volume on Kaišiadorys bishopric has been published. Throughout the history of Lithuania, the Catholic Church has been the most important and irreplaceable upholder of spiritual and artistic culture. Churches, especially in small settlements, were important or even the main highlights of architecture. Treasures of sacral art collected in churches not only encouraged piety, but also gave aesthetic pleasure, served as examples for self-taught folk artists and educated the aesthetical tastes of believers. Collections of historical art of national significance have been preserved at the Kaišiadorys bishopric. Churches of Merkinė, Pivašiūnai, Videniškės, Jieznas and many others in the bishopric are famous for such works of art, Luckily, the churches of this bishopric and works of sacral art accumulated in them did not suffer greatly during the two world wars of the 20th century and the period of Soviet atheism. Most of them have preserved their authenticity and are an important part of Lithuanian cultural heritage. [...]. [From the publication]
