ENInspired by Lithuanian ethnogenesis, in the late 16th century the Рас (pron. Pätz) family created their own family legend, according to which their ancestor Cosmus Pacius came to Lithuania from ancient Rome together with Palemon. Also, the Рас family was said to be related to the Florentine family of del Pazzi, which was supported by the similarity in the sounding of the name and the Рас coat of arms, which had elements similar to the arms of Florence. The widely accepted idea, in both Polish and Italian writings, of a relationship with the Florentine del Pazzis, and the seeking of common ancestor in ancient Rome lent splendor to the Pacs, who in the early 17th century aspired to the circle of most important clans of the Polish Commonwealth. Maintaining their contacts with the del Pazzis included promoting devotion to their "relative" St. May Magdalene del Pazzi, and an interest in the Carmelite order. For this reason Stefan Рас funded two monasteries in Wilno - St. Teresa for the Carmelites, and St. Józef for the Carmelite nuns. In the context of contacts with the Florentine "family," there was significance in the Pacs' acquaintance with the Medičis. This was expressed by more than the exchange of correspondence and gifts. It is almost certain that two eminent artists of the 17th century, Michelangelo Palloni and Giovanni Pictro Perti arrived in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as proteges of the Medičis. They became two of the most important artists creating in the Commonwealth in the late 17th century. The situation was repeated in the late 18th century, when Ludwik Рас, the last of the clan, brought Henryk Marconi and Ludwik Kauffman from Italy. Again, these two artists were among the most important creating works in that part of Europe.Prestigious contacts between the Рас clan and the Medičis and del Pazzis were also maintained by voyages of Lithuanians to Italy, where they became part of the Medici court. The idea of lineage tracing back to ancient Rome and contacts with Italians affected the artistic taste of the Рас family. This resulted in a Roman style of the churches and residences funded by them, not only in the 17th but also in the late 18th century. In that way, the Pacs emphasized their privileged lineage compared to the rest of the landed gentry. Whereas in Italy the Pacs sought out contacts with prestigious acquaintances, in the Commonwealth the situation was totally the reverse. It was the Italians that sought the protection of the Pacs, which usually resulted in granting of citizenship and nobility to the Italian immigrant. [From the publication]
