ENHieronimus Kryszpin-Kirszenstein became Grand Undertreasurer on Sep. 4 1663 and served in char, office until 1676, when at the request of King Jan III Sobieski, he sold it to Benedykt Sapieha for 10,000 ducats. He assumed the office after the tragic death of Wincenty Aleksander Gosiewski, who was murdered on Nov. 20 1662. Prior to that, he held the office of head chef of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. He died a few months after leaving office. Many valuable primary source documents from the office of Hieronimus Kryszpin- Kirszenstein can be found in one of the volumes of manuscripts at the National Library in Kiev. The volume came from the library of Joachim Chreptowicz at Szczorsów. It contains, among others, letters from the undertreasurer to the regional assembly at Wilkomierz on the subject of collection of taxes established by the assemblies, information about expenditures and arrears and problems related thereto, and summaries of accounts. Similar information was sent to each of the regional assemblies of the Duchy. These materials provide an opportunity to more fully evaluate the functioning of the Lithuanian treasury and the work of the undertreasurer over almost 13 years. They reflect the financial problems of the state at that time, as indicated by the great engagement of the undertreasurer in discharging his duties. But it was at him that the gentry, gathered in regional assemblies and the national assembly, aimed their displeasure over the lack of funds for the military and diplomatic needs of the Commonwealth, they blamed him for monetary chaos, for issuing currency of low value. The materials are testimony of ever-growing malfunctioning of the administration of the treasury, resulting from its lack of adaption to the far-flung territories of the state, lack of reforms, and an organizational structure dating from the 16th century. By the second half of the 17th century, the loose administrative system created opportunities for malfeasances of all sorts. Delays in executing the decisions of the Treasury Tribunal and military treasury commissions often allowed debtors to enjoy long-term impunity. The gentry's demands Were limited primarily to closer oversight of the undertreasurer. They demanded that be present his accounts to the Treasury Tribunal, not the assemblies, that he not fill the office of chief justice of the treasury court. This dissertation is meant to present primary source material. A detailed analysis of these materials, with cross-reference to accounts approved by the assemblies, will permit a thorough evaluation of the undertreasurer and the financial situation of the Commonwealth in the years 1663-1676.
