ENThe article analyses the role of the General Diet of the Commonwealth in the regulation of nobles’ self-government in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1569–1605. A conclusion is made that the consideration of the local problems had a firm place in the work of the Diet at that time. The General Diet often approved decisions, related primarily to the delimitation between the various regions (districts), the organization of local legal proceedings, providing the trade and means of communication, the collection of local taxes. The district noble communities were the main initiator of such decisions. It must be stressed that the Diet resolutions gave broad powers in the field of self-government to the regional councils (sejmiks) of the GDL. [From the publication]
