ENJoniškis environs wooden chapels architecture formed in the 18th century. The Samogitian peculiarities of this kind of buildings are characteristic of it. We see the Highlanders’ small architecture features in the crosses and little chapels most widely spread in the second half of the 19th century. The earliest known Pieta composition carved by a folk sculptor was found in a chapel of Kalnelis village cemetary! The sculpture was created by a local folk master in the middle of the 18th century and it reflects the influence of baroque sculpture. The folk sculpture considerably spread in the second half of the 19th century and in the second- third decades of the 20th century. Small sculptures were carved by popular masters of statues of God and saints and by the masters that acquired this kind of creation after having helped the professional sculptors. Some primitive sculpture plastic art, sponteneity, sincerity predominate in the creation of self educated masters of God and saints. We notice some influence of realistic art characteristic of church art of that period in the statuetes of more educated authors.
