ENThe research aims to find out the role of the image of Lithuanians (national and clergymen) using discourse analysis within the national patriotic narrative structure of a cultural historical novel by Latgalian author Antons Rupainis, Tauta gryb dzeivōt (The People want to live, 1963). Lithuanian national concept is topical in comparative (precedents’) narrative - a small nation; a nation of friendly neighbours; brothers, relatives (one belief, related language); ‘fellow sufferers’, a similarly suppressed nation (print ban, polonization and russification), a sample to follow, contrary to the Balts (the Latvians-Lutheran believers). The Latgalians, willing to live, devote the acknowledgemental (conditional) narrative functions of supporters and helpers to Lithuanian clergymen, among whom one can find confederates, patrons, officials - mediators in relations with Poles; advisors, benefactors, etc. For Rupainis, living means mental self-realization, positioning oneself in an attitude of nations towards other nations, first of all with those that are the closest historically - the Poles and the Lithuanians; comparing and finding own ethnic and national identity parameters that distinguish a small nation among others, therefore, a precedent (willing to be the same as others; why are we worse than others?) and obstacles (captivity, obscurantism, limitations) play significant role in maintaining the national-patriotic pathos; they help to formulate and set the main task: we must catch up to those who are ahead.Rupainis sees the originality of Latgalian culture through the eyes of clergymen, public and culture figures in: 1) language; 2) religion; 3) unselfish patriotism. Any publication in the Latgalian language is first of all a testimony of the vitality of the language and only then is a cultural act. The Catholic identity parts the Latgalians from ‘the Balts’ (the Latvians from other parts of Latvia), who are Lutherans; that is why the Latgalians feel a more organic connection with the Catholic Lithuanians and Poles and seek for their protection, advice and help, as well as see them as an example for their efforts.
