ENIn 1795, when the tsarist Russia occupied Lithuania, the most important archive of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, later called the Lithuanian Metrica, was taken to Russia. After the declaration of the independence of the Lithuanian State in 1918, an opportunity appeared to return archives from Russia. In 1921 and 1925-1926 negotiations were carried out about Lithuanian archives and the Lithuanian Metrica, but the Lithuanian Metrica was not returned. In the article there is surveyd the activity of historian Konstantinas Jablonskis caring about the Lithuanian Metrica. In 1933 he made great efforts to begin negotiations about the archives, but they were unsuccessful. The authority of the Soviet archives only let him read a few books of Lithuanian Metrica in Moscow. After that it became clear to reach the Lithuanian Metrica for Lithuanian historians was impossible. Despite this K. Jablonskis endeavoured that the question concerning return of the Lithuanian Metrica from Moscow would not be forgotten in Lithuania. In 1936 he attempted to get permission for taking photographs of the Lithuanian Metrica’s documents, but did not get it- к. Jablonskis stated that the unwillingness of the Soviet Russia to return the Lithuanian archives was closely connected with its political aims. In 1941 K. Jablonskis became a director of the Institute of History. In spite of complicated circumstances caused by the Soviet occupation, he actively sought to return the Lithuanian archives and the Lithuanian Metrica to Lithuania. After the Second World War K. Jablonskis oficially did not talk about the return of the Lithuanian Metrica, but concentrated on scientific investigations of manuscripts. In the 5th decade of the 20th century K. Jablonskis could read the books of Lithuanian Metrica in Moscow. Then he cared about accumulation of its material in Lithuania and use of it investigating Lithuanian history. Namely on his initiative the Lithuanian Institute of History acquired the first microfilms of the books of Lithuanian Metrica from Moscow. [From the publication]
