ENThe search for a new meaningful and formal content of the whole process of foreign language learning is typical for modern tendencies in foreign languages (particularly Russian) teaching. Currently, the most promising methods of foreign languages teaching are connected with the cognitive-communicative trend in language learning in general with an emphasis on language acquisition in order to become proficient in active and appropriate use of the language in the real communication with native speakers. Traditional teaching methods are not always able to cope with all the challenges of learning a foreign language, especially in the absence of the certain speech environment. Audiovisual teaching method based on the use of authentic video and film material and designed primarily to mastery of spoken language, allows presenting a real communicative process in its entirety at the lesson. Moreover this method makes the lesson more dynamic and diversifies the types of work performed at the lesson. Selection of authentic video materials for educational purposes is a very important stage in the preparation of studies and should be done on the basis of the criteria set out in the article. Using various combinations of authentic video materials on a particular topic at the lesson provides sustainable production of language skills which are necessary for successful communication in a foreign language. Authentic video materials can be successfully used not only for the work in the classroom, but also for extracurricular, independent work.The author concludes that the audiovisual method of foreign languages teaching perfectly suits the cognitive-communicative orientation which is established in the foreign language teaching methodology during the last decade.
