ENThe problem of war prisoners in Lithuanian historiography is purely analyzed. Data in archives and published sources allow looking deeper into this topic and answering the following question – what politics pursued Lithuanian Republic in respect to war prisoners in 1918–1923. Repatriation of Lithuanian war prisoners of World War I from European states, struggle with Bolsheviks, Poles and the Bermontist in the process of establishment of Lithuanian state, raised a problem of war prisoners of Independence struggles. In January of 1918 Lithuanian Council raised a question of Lithuanian prisoners from WW I. After establishing independence of Lithuania, Committee of Repatriation of Expatriates and Prisoners were organized. Work of the Committee depended on Germany, which was blocking repatriation of Lithuanian war prisoners. When Committee of Repatriation of Expatriates and Prisoners was transferred to Ministry of Internal Affairs, Section of Repatriation of Expatriates and Prisoners was established. This institution started organizing nourishment and sleeping stations for repatriating expatriates and prisoners, initiated enactment of laws concerning repatriation of expatriates and prisoners, regulated its own activities.
