Mojżeszowicz, Gordon, Ickowicz: the Jewish economic elites in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (seventeenth and eighteenth century)

LTŽydai buvo didžiausia Abiejų Tautų Respublikos etnokonfesinė dalis. Apskaičiuota, jog XVIII a. pabaigoje jie sudarė apie 9 procentus visų valstybės gyventojų skaičiaus bei didžiąją dalį miestų gyventojų: apie 40-50 procentų miestiečių buvo žydų tautybės. Žydai vaidino svarbų vaidmenį ekonominiame šalies gyvenime. Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės žydų ekonominis elitas XVII-XVIII a. amžiais. Įprastai žydai tyrinėjami kaip homogeniška grupė; atskiras dėmesys skiriamas jų bendruomenių vidiniam susiskaidymui, socialiniams skirtumams ir kitiems skirtingumo aspektams yra gana retas žydų istorijos tyrimuose. Todėl šiame tyrime siekiama pristatyti ekonominį žydų elitą, jų kilmę, išsilavinimą. Pasirinkta tyrimo rezultatus pristatyti ne prozopografinės studijos, o atvejo analizės forma. Nagrinėtos kelių žydų, kilusių iš biblinių karalių ar įtakingų šeimų biografijos, aptartos jų karjeros, veiklos strategijos bei gyvenimo būdas. Pagrindiniai tyrimo šaltiniai – karaliaus kanceliarijos, teismų ir kiti dokumentai. Pristatomos asmenybės – žydų ekonominio elito atstovai – sugebėjo sėkmingai siekti karjeros krikščioniškoje LDK aplinkoje. Jų bendradarbiavimas su teismais, įsitraukimas į šeimos verslus leido jiems sukaupti nemenką turtą bei įgyti aukštą socialinį statusą, tačiau išlaikyti tikėjimą ir kultūrą. ENThe Jews were the largest ethno confessional part of Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. It is estimated that in the end of 18th century they accounted for about 9 percent of the total population of the country and the major part of city dwellers: about 40-50 percent of city dwellers were Jews. The Jews played an important role in the economic life of the country. In the article, the economic elite of the Jews of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 17th – 18th centuries is analysed. Usually, Jews are analysed as homogenous group; the separate focus on the internal fragmentation of their communities, the social differences and the other aspects of difference is quite rare in the studies of Jewish history. Therefore, in this research, the aim is to present economic elite of Jews, their origins and education. The results of the research will be presented in a form of a case study, not in prosopography. The biographies of a few Jews, who originated from Biblical Kings and influential families, are analysed, their careers, strategies of activity and way of life are discussed. The main sources of the research –legal and other documents of King's Chancellors. The presented personalities – the representatives of Jews economic elite – managed to successfully achieve the career in the Christian environment of GDL. Their communication with courts, the engagement in family businesses allowed them to accumulate great fortune and gain high social status as well as maintain faith and culture. The research revealed that these persons and their way of life were closer to the GDL nobility than other Jews. This is how the heterogeneity of GDL Jew's community is proved.
