ENIn a detailed description of Soviet aggression against Lithuania, carried out on 15 June 1940, the author discusses preparations made by the Soviet side as well as assorted steps taken for the purpose of breaking Lithuanian resistance and the acceptance of Soviet demands. Particular attention is drawn to Soviet diplomacy, its methods and the application of measures aiming at provocation and determent. The author recreated the circulation of Soviet diplomatic correspondence and the process of decision making. Other topics include the behaviour and conduct of the Lithuanian side, its plans for resistance, subsequently rejected, and the mechanism of submission under the brutal pressure exerted by the Soviet Union. Particular emphasis was placed on the role played by the President of Lithuania Antanas Smetona, a supporter of resistance who, once his plans failed, decided to seek refuge in Germany. The article deals with an important fragment of the history of East-Central Europe. [From the publication]
