EN"Kūdikių prietelius" (Infants’ Friend) is the translation of one of the editions of a German textbook "Der Kinderfreund" by Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow, an especially popular author of educational books in Prussia in the second half of the 18th century. The book was translated into Lithuanian by Kristijonas Gotlybas Milkus (Christian Gottlieb Mielcke). [...] "Kūdikių prietelius" was reprinted three more times and was used in schools almost to the mid-19th century. The present work is a documentary critical publication of the first edition of "Kūdikių prietelius" and a study "Kūdikių prietelius as the First Semi-Secular Textbook" in Lithuanian. The critical publication contains a documentary rewriting of the text, a textological apparatus and comments, as well as a selected index of Lithuanian words and a dictionary of loan words. The publication continues the work on studies and publication of Lithuanian writing monuments of the epoch of Kristijonas Donelaitis, and it is expected to be useful for the researchers in Lithuanian writings, students, teachers, and all those interested in the roots of the Lithuanian language and literature.
