ENThis article analyses volunteering as one of the opportunities for students of higher education institutions to take part in public activities and gain professional competences as chosen by students due to their altruistic or egoistic motives, while also experiencing diverse benefits. The purpose of the research is to analyse the volunteering motives and benefits of Lithuanian students studying at higher education institutions. The research has revealed that students understand the importance of volunteering and take part in long-term voluntary activities. They are encouraged to volunteer by their professional and personal self-realization and the willingness to help others. While taking part in various volunteering activities, respondents highlight the accumulation of professional knowledge, skills and experience and personal satisfaction as significant benefits for them.
