ENThe chapter deals with the relation between Christian and Pagan traditions. It’s author J. Trinkūnas claim, that the information of Lithuanian national identity went through a complicated historical rout. Christianity arrived late to Lithuania and it’s influence to Lithuanian, especially peasant culture wasn’t big. Ethnic culture, being a main cultural force, kept national existence. During the formation of national self-consciousness in 19th century, there was an emphasis on Pagan tradition, which played an important part in Lithuanian history. In 20th century there were established organized forms of restoring the old belief. Romuva - organized expression of the old Baltic Religion. Before and after the war it became a systematic movement, paying more and more emphasis to national customs and folklore, where there were traditions hiding of old Baltic belief. Lithuanian national identity today is perceived as a combination of Christian and Pagan traditions.
