ENCurrent book is based on results of comprehensive research of participation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) in the Livonian War 1558-1570 and influence of the martial law on the development of internal processes in the country. The Introduction presents brief overview of the state of scholarship and source studies on the research issues. Author indicates that despite the consistent interest to the problem of the Livonian War in the scholarship, his predecessors did not pay decent attention to the issue of the War's influence on domestic developments in the GDL The First chapter is devoted to the analysis of military actions and diplomatic affairs between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Muscovy. Special attention is given to analysis of the nature and essence of the Livonian policy of the GDL at the beginning of the Livonian War as well as major military events - the takeover of Polack by Muscovian army in 1563 and the Ula battle of 156-1 The Second chapter reflects on organization of the GDL military forces during the Livonian War, namely on the issues of mobilization of irregular army and mercenaries. The role and nature of the Polish mercenaries are of the principal concern of the author. The Third chapter provides analysis of the financial and material military resources of the GDL, including characteristics of the state military taxation policy and reasons for the crisis of the GDL budget. Special emphasis is given to the problem of payments to the mercenaries.The Fourth chapter is devoted to the study of the influence of the martial law on the developments in the GDL internal policy, and particularly to the process of concluding the union with Polish Kingdom. Special attention is given to the issue of formation of the public opinion towards the Livonian War; the position of the GDL political elites is especially analyzed. The issues of everyday life and political orientation of the borderland population during the wartime in case of moving frontier are touched upon in the chapter. Additionally, the demographic situation in the Voivodship of Polack, occupied by the Muscovian troops, is characterized. Major results of the research are summed up in the Conclusion.
