ENJust before the beginning of the nineteenth century, the political system of the GDL underwent radical changes that were reflected in the costume style of gentry which in the earlier times had been the same as Lithuanian Jewish costumes. As a result of these changes, Lithuanian old native costumes were replaced by the new pan-European rational clothing, yet Jewish costumes stayed unchanged thus forming an exclusive Jewish costume style. Russian Tsarist politics had a negative attitude towards Jewish customs and costumes. During the nineteenth century, Tsarist edicts were passed to destroy habitual Jewish life. On the other hand, Jewish customs, costumes and modes of life became very conspicuous and unusual in the monotonous cosmopolitan environment. It is this unusual character that draw the attention of Lithuanian and foreign memoir writers. [From the publication]
