ENAt the end of the summer of 1733, a special Russian envoy, Lt. Colonel Georg von Liewen, was sent from St. Petersburg to Lithuania to see the senators and ministers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. He had to gather knowledge about the attitudes of the Lithuanian noblemen concerning the impending election of a king as well as to impress on the noblemen that the election of Stanisław Leszczyński as king would be entirely unacceptable to Russia as well as to Prussia and Austria and would not be in accord with the constitutions of the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania and therefore Russia could resolve to use military force in order to prevent the return of S. Leszczyński to the throne. An analysis of the authentic documents of this mission, which are preserved in the Foreign Policy Archive of the Russian Empire, allows the conclusion to be drawn that G. von Liewen was authorised to promise Russian support in the struggle for the crown to only three Lithuanian noblemen: Chancellor Michal Serwacy Wiśniowiecki, his brother, Janusz, the Castellan of Krakow, and Lithuanian Marshall Pawel Sanguszko. In St. Petersburg the priority candidate was held to be the Lithuanian Chancellor, irrespective that the Russian ambassador was sceptical about M. S. Wiśniowiecki. Actually the Russian offer to provide support in the struggle for the crown was made only for the GDL Chancellor. Although the latter did not agree to openly declare his candidacy and to seek support from Russia, nevertheless ties of trust were formed between the Chancellor and Russia.G. von Liewen succeeded in establishing himself so that Russia could further expect support from the Radvila family and the majority of the members of the Oginski family. Meanwhile the majority of Russia's old political clients already supported S. Leszczyński. During the spring mission of G. von Liewen to Lithuania, the other two, who were loyal to Russia and judged by Russia to be possible candidates to the crown: Jonusz Wiśniowiecki and Paweł Sanguszko, supported S. Leszczyński and attempted to draw the GDL Chancellor onto this candidate's side. The alliance formed by the GDL Chancellor with Russia nevertheless proved stronger and in the end both J. Wiśniowiecki and P. Sanguszko joined the camp of the allies of Russia and opponents to S. Leszczyński. It is possible to state that during the mission of G. von Liewen the foundation was laid for the future anti-Stanislaw coalition of the Wisniowiccki-Radvila-Oginski-Sanguszko families.
