Lithuanian nationalism : fixed or fluid borders in the 21st century?

LTMaždaug prieš dešimtį metų Leonidas Donskis rašė apie poreikį kritiškiau apmastyti lietuviškąjį nacionalizmą. Šiuo straipsniu siekiama atsiliepti į šį kvietimą ir prisidėti prie diskusijos, atsižvelgiant į pastarojo laikotarpio įvykius bei naujausius teorinius nacionalizmo aiškinimo būdus. Pasitelkus šiuolaikines nacionalizmo teorijas, straipsnyje nagrinėjami charakteringi Lietuvos nacionalizmo ir tautinio tapatumo elementai. Autoriui rūpi normatyvinis aspektas, o nacionalizmas apibrėžiamas konstruktyvistiškai ir instrumentaliai: nacionalizmas ir tapatumas yra kuriami ir perkuriami konstruktai, o tautos nėra laike nekintančios duotybės. Analizės atspirties taškas – nacionalizmo kaip diskurso forma arba, B. Anderson’o žodžiais tariant, pasakojimas apie politinę bendruomenę. Straipsnyje keliami tokie klausimai: kokiems tikslams tarnauja šie nacionaliniai tapatumai? Ko galima tikėtis iš lietuviškojo tautokūros projekto praėjus dvidešimčiai metų nuo valstybingumo atkūrimo? Ar galima tikėtis ramios jo evoliucijos ar kaitos, ar to reikėtų siekti? Ką Lietuvos nacionalizmas ir tautinis tapatumas reiškia XX a. vis labiau integruotoje regioninėje ir pasaulinėje ekonomikos ir politikos sistemoje? ENAbout 10 years ago, Leonidas Donskis wrote about the need of more critical thinking of Lithuanian nationalism. This aim of the article is to respond to this invitation and to join the discussion, while considering the events of the latter period and the latest theoretical methods of the interpretation of nationalism. With the reference to today's theories of nationalism, the article analyses the characteristic elements of Lithuanian nationalism and national identity. The author is concerned about normative aspect, while nationalism is constructively and instrumentally defined: nationalism and identity are created and recreated constructs, while nations are not the changeless givens in time. The starting point of analysis – the form of nationalism as discourse or, according to B. Anderson, the story about political community. The questions raised in the article: what are the aims of these national identities? What to expect from Lithuanian project of the creation of the nation after 20 years since the restoration of statehood? Can its peaceful evolution or change be expected, or should it be pursued? What does the Lithuanian nationalism and national identity mean in 20th century increasingly integrated regional and global system of economics and politics? Did Lithuania, which protected the fundamental nation, start giving priority to civil, more open, cosmopolitical and more progressive nationalism of Western Europe, while leaving the "ethnical East" for the liberal democratic West?.
