ENThe article analyses site-specific artworks and examples of architecture of exhibitions, in particular those that have proved to be the most innovative in terms of engaging and questioning the exhibition space and those that have entered into a dialogue with the environment and have been specifically created for the space of the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC). Much attention is paid to the relation between an artwork and the space, as well as the specific forms of artistic expression. The author of the article also discusses the way in which, thanks to the artists’ creative practice, site-specific artworks and an art institution become interconnected. A conclusion is reached that the CAC building and its interior spaces are the main source of inspiration for sitespecific artwork and architecture of exhibitions: not only as a "container" of certain physical parameters, but also from the viewpoint of "institutional critique". The building as an exhibition space affects artworks not only physically and semantically, but also encodes important historical facts and institutional conflicts of power, and becomes a bridge between the past and the present. Thus, the way the CAC as an institution and a whole of interior spaces influences the expression and spread of contemporary art in the local context is univocally important, since it is the main venue where international artists show their site-specific artworks, and it has been encouraging and financially supporting Lithuanian artists to create such artworks. Therefore, both the exhibited artworks and architectural decisions of exhibitions confirm that the CAC attaches great importance to the exhibition space. [From the publication]
