ENThe article „Self Identity and Exile in the Diaries” of A. Nyka-Niliūnas, J. Mekas and W. Gombrowicz is devoted to the analysis of the diaries of the Lithuanian and Polish exodus authors. The article analyses certain personal identity features disclosed in the diaries. The features reveal as personal behaviour, as social masks accepted in a foreign/alien country. Roles of a truth teller and lying world observer, now passive now active liberator of the national culture, successor and breaker of cultural and literary tradition, victim and executioner are exposed in the diaries. The Polish author appears to be of much more original and radical views, whereas, the self-consciousness of the Lithuanian authors is intimately connected to the traditional aesthetic and ethnic values.
