Polesė - "pamiškė", "palenkė" ar "didelių pelkių kraštas"?

LTPolesė labai svarbi baltų ir slavų seniausiųjų santykių istorijai, ypač jos onomastika ir archeologiniai paminklai, liudijantys, kad tai galėjusi būti ankstyviausių baltų ir slavų kontaktų zona. Kai kurių archeologų nuomone, slavų gentys Polesėje ėmė kurtis I tūkstantmečio viduryje, kai ten pasirodė Prahos-Korčako archeologinės kultūros paminklų. Iki to meto tarp genčių, gyvenusių Polesėje, dominavusios baltų (vakarinių ir Padnieprės) gentys. Tam tikra prasme Polesės slavų istorija – tai ir ten gyvenusių priešistorinių baltų genčių asimiliavimo istorija. Baltiškų pėdsakų apstu ir Polesės tarmių leksikoje, ir etnografijoje, ir onomastikoje. Polesėje užfiksuota daug skolinių iš baltų kalbų, kurie būdingi tik šiam regionui. Tai skatina atidžiau gilintis ir į paties pavadinimo Polesė kilmę. Atsižvelgiant į toponimo semantines, etimologines, realines ypatybes, esama rimto pagrindo teigti, kad tai – baltiškos kilmės pavadinimas, reiškęs „didelių pelkių“ kraštą, o semantinės sąsajos su mišku atsirado vėliau, rytų slavų gentims ėmus įsisavinti ir kraštą, ir jo baltiškuosius vietovardžius.Reikšminiai žodžiai: Rytų slavai; "Polesė"; Jotvingiai; Baltizmas; Upėvardžiai; Fiziografinės ypatybės; Apeliatyvai; Substratinis paveldas.

ENThe Polesie region is extremely significant for the history of old contacts between the Balts and the Slavs because of its onomastics and archaeological monuments, which offer evidence that this could have been the zone where the Balts and the Slavs first met. According to some archaeologists, Slavic tribes began settling in the Polesie in the middle of the 1st millennium, when Praque-Korchak archaeological monuments occurred there. Before that the Baltic (western and Dnieper) tribes prevailed among the tribes that inhabited the Polesie. The history of the Polesie Slavs, in some sense, is also the history of the assimilation of pre-historic Baltic tribes that lived there. The lexis, ethnography and onomastics of the Polesie dialects contain numerous Baltic traces as well. Many loanwords from the Baltic languages, characteristic solely to this region, have been registered in Polesie. This calls for deeper analysis into the origin of the name Polesie itself. The semantic, etymological and real features of the toponym provide considerable grounds for a claim that this is a name of Baltic origin, which meant “a land of great swamps” while semantic links with the forest occurred later as the Eastern Slavic tribes began to acquire both the land and its Baltic place-names.
