ENOn February 16–May 20, 2012, Vilnius Picture Gallery hosted an international exhibition “The Crosses stand for virtue, the Arrow for victory... The Sapiehas – statesmen, art patrons and collectors”. The exhibition was organized by the National Museum Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and Wawel Royal Castle Museum, in cooperation with The Lithuanian Art Museum and other partners. Through authentic 16th–19th century exhibits and iconographic material the exhibition dedicated to one of the most famous princely families in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – the Sapieha princes – aimed at revealing the exceptional merits of this renowned family on the development of Lithuanian statehood and its artistic and cultural heritage. The article presents the contents of the exhibition and its most interesting exhibits – the portrait gallery of Kodeń and individual portraits of the most famous representatives of Sapieha family, Sapieha family history, the documents and books that reflect their influence, as well as articles of fine and applied arts that belonged to Sapiehas or which they gave to churches and monasteries.
