ENOn the basis of the questionnaire survey and the opinion of VLKK (State Commission of the Lithuanian Language) web site visitors, the present article aims to describe the students' and teachers' attitudes towards such issues as: 1) the exclusive spelling of third person future tense verbs “siūs” and “vys”, 2) the spelling of past simple tense verb “džiūvo” and its derivatives, etc. The usage of these verb forms in text corpus were analysed in order to make the research more diverse. 133 respondents participated in the survey: i.e. 59 teachers of the Lithuanian language from different schools of Lithuania, 71 senior students of Radviliškis Vaižgantas gymnasium and Matuizos secondary school of Varėna district, 3 adult respondents who are not teachers, and the visitors of the web site www.vlkk.lt. The teachers who participated in the survey expressed a rather conservative point of view on this issue, i.e. most of them consider that spelling should not be changed, while a greater proportion of students have stated that such spelling should be abandoned. Furthermore, the visitors of the web site www.vlkk.lt write these forms in different ways but the variants with long vowels are more frequently encountered. In text corpus the forms with a long vowel are most frequently used, although some cases with short vowels can also be found. The results of the conducted questionnaire survey and the data of the text corpus reveal that the current usage of verb forms of “vys”, “siūs” and “džiūvo” (their spelling and pronunciation) as well as the attitude towards their spelling are not homogenous. Thus, validation of dual spelling would be a good option, which could help to avoid a number of mistakes and would facilitate the teaching of the Lithuanian language. [From the publication]
