ENThe article focuses on the Catholic clergy of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania that pursued education and acquisition of knowledge at foreign universities. The key objective of the research is to draw the framework of the main tendencies in the educational trips of Lithuanian Catholic clergy, situation of scholarly training and variety of education and development possibilities from the perspective of the intellectual landscape of western Catholicism. The principal object of the research is the social stratum in the hands of which was not only the execution of the highest ecclesiastical functions but also the lowest rank - parish clergy. The indefiniteness of the process related to the acquisition of higher education requires the introduction of development stages of Catholic clergymen's educational trips and the main peculiarities of education acquisition. An attempt was made to view the trips of the representatives of Lithuanian established church from a broader perspective at the same time comparing them to the picture of educational trips of the rest of the GDL population. In addition, the author aspired to present the level of education of the GDL clergy and review the development in the realisation of the importance of education. The Lithuanian state was formed through the adoption and cultivation of the features of the European society, however, looking at the possibilities in the search for training of the GDL clergymen in the context of the spread of the West European civilization, different elements of its development emerge. The article searches for motives accountable for the fact that in the late 14th - early 16th century Lithuanian Catholic clergymen preferred the closest university of Krakow, whereas starting from the 1520s the rise in the interest towards German institutions of higher education is observable. What reasons underlie the fact that in the first stages of educational trips (late 14th century - 1420s) Catholic educational institutions were prevailing, whereas starting from the 1520s-1530s a slight intensification in the interest to seek training at reformed universities of different confessional orientations is observed.
