ENJurgis Matulaitis was an extraordinary personality in the modern history of Lithuanian religious orders. He made and still makes a significant influence on the development of Lithuanian religious orders. The concern about religious orders was an integral part of broad and diverse activities of J. Matulaitis. This concern permeated his intellectual texts as well. It should be mentioned that intellectual heritage of J. Matulaitis has not been researched enough. Due to the soviet occupation J. Matulaitis’ intellectual texts related to religious orders are still poorly known by academic and public society. J. Matulaitis considered religious orders to be an important tool to achieve the glory of God and salvation of the mankind. He emphasized the unconditional trust in the Holy Roman Church. Blessed J. Matulaitis underlined the importance of freedom of God’s children and balance / harmony in a religious community. In his texts J. Matulaitis emphasized the importance of universal development of the members of monastic community; however, he warned not to underestimate the significance of ascetic measures. While stressing the importance of spiritual development, J. Matulaitis encouraged the members of religious orders to be in touch with society and to acknowledge its problems. The decision about the spheres and forms of the activity of religious order should be made by taking in mind these problems. In J. Matulaitis’ vision the monastic community should collaborate with the lay by achieving the mission of religious order. Blessed J. Matulaitis urged the religious orders to use modern means and forms of apostleship. In his intellectual texts J. Matulaitis examined various aspects of monastic community. He identified internal and external factors that are important for the formation of monastic community. The common goal, mutual commitments, as well as monastic rule that shape similar behaviour and rhythm of living unite members of religious order. Blessed J. Matulaitis stressed the importance of novitiate in preparing young people to live in the monastic community. J. Matulaitis realized that it is difficult to reach love and peaceful coexistence between the members of monastic community; however, he characterized common life as a place where nuns and monks can learn charity and get rid of self-love. In J. Matulaitis’ perception lay people closely related to the monastic community are its integral part. In the period of formation of modern nations J. Matulaitis warned to watch out for chauvinism and emphasized the universal mission of the Holly Roman Church. [From the publication]
