ENThe present article analyses the activity of the educator and public figure of the Vilnius region, the Reverend Kristupas Čibiras, in “Rytas” society. Most attention is focused on his organizational activities in “Rytas” society in the interwar period, as well as his pedagogical ideas. The author of the article refers to the published memoirs, texts by researchers, and manuscript sources by the Reverend Čibiras held in the Manuscript Department of the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, which have not been analysed in historiography before. The presented data reveal his considerable organizational and pedagogical contribution to the preservation of Lithuanian schools and cultural institutions in the Vilnius region, his plans to develop public education, and build Lithuanian cultural identity. Čibiras played an important part in the improvement and development of the educational system. From his first years in the society Čibiras delivered lectures for the society's members, students of the teachers' seminary and training courses, as well as the wide public of the Vilnius region; he also taught in a Lithuanian gymnasium. Čibiras was one of the organisers of evening courses for adults. The focus of his educational activities was the development of individual spirituality, high morals, and Lithuanian cultural identity. “Rytas” society led by Čibiras sought that its reading-rooms should serve not only as venues of reading and distribution of Lithuanian literature, but also as cultural and educational centres of local Lithuanian communities, and thus adjusted its activities to the interests and possibilities of the local population. The society aimed to integrate the understanding of history and national heritage of the Vilnius region with the general cultural context of Lithuania, which was extremely important for the preservation and strengthening of Lithuanian cultural identity.
