ENModern Lithuanian identity was created by actualizing different aspects of Lithuanian culture (including particularities of traditional calendar hol idays). Certain role was played by the media in this process, which popu larized some holidays presenting them and transformed them by showing them in specific ways. The subject of this paper is presentation of calendar holidays in most early Lithuanian periodicals (newspapers and calendars). The author aims to find out which calendar holidays were presented in the early media and how they were presented, and seek to clarify the context of the presentation. The content analysis of different newspapers ("Aušra", "Varpas", "Vilniaus žinios", "Lietuvos žinios", "Šaltinis" and others that were pub lished in 19th с and in the beginning of 20th c.) as well as of the diverse calendars of the 19th - the beginning of 20th centuries showed that ap propriate material is quite insignificant. Information concerning the calendar holidays in the media of the period is slim. Although the focus on Lithuanian national revival in the media of that time is extremely high, the particularities of Lithuanian traditional calendar festivals in creation of national identity almost are not explicated. Grid of the holidays at the time is best reflected in the specific periodical publications – calendars. The festive grid was definitely based of Catholic tradition. Despite that the calendars of that time start to calculate years from the 1st of January, the annual festival that had vital importance was the Easter. The associated movable anniversary celebrations also had great importance and were distinguished from the daily round in the calendars. Newspapers of the analyzed period gave the main reference point to the New Year day as well as to Christmas. Passing years usually were discussed before these days and the forthcoming years were presented after these days. Readers of the press also were felicitated often concerning these holidays by the editorial offices. Presentations of traditional calendar holidays in Lithuanian periodicals during prohibition of Lithuanian press and after its recuperation almost remain unchanged. Of course, after repossession of Lithuanian press in 1904, Lithuanian press multiplied and became more diverse. Additionally, ideological directions of specific periodicals also diverged. Despite all the newspapers tried to revival Lithuanian spirit and identity further, some of them selected religious standpoint (primary newspaper "Šaltinis"), others selected secular positions. The calendar festivals were presented in catholic press more often. [From the publication]
