ENThe results of representative surveys provided in 1992 and in 1993 are analyzed in the article: in 1992 the questions were about a participation and impressions from the "Baltic Way" (1989) and a participation and impressions from pope John Paul II visit in Lithuania (1993). Open-ended questions were used for analysis of impressions of the participants of the events. A representative survey done in 1992 revealed that 31 percent of the respondents declared that they participated in the event in 1989 (stood in the chain) directly and 36 percent were listening to a direct radio broadcasting. The most active were better educated, middle age and inhabitants of the biggest cities. A representative survey carried out in September 1993 (just аfter the Pope's visit in Lithuania) showed that during the visit in different meetings participated 17 percent of the population. As in the case of the "Baltic Way", in the meetings participated better educated, middle age, urban population. Answers to the open question about the "Baltic Way" were separated into some groups: "people's unity" – 59 percent, "friendliness, attentiveness" – 16 percent, "special mood, spirituality, hope and joy" – 15 percent, "striving for freedom, independence and a common goal" – 12 percent, "people's courage, strength and patriotism" – 9 percent, "concrete images" – 6 percent. Answers to the open ended question about Pope John Paul II visit in Lithuania were grouped in such a way: "personal characteristics of pope John Paul II" (30 percent), "characteristics of activity during the visit" (28 percent), "emotions and feelings of the people during the visit" (7 percent), and "organizational side of the visit" (6 percent).Comparing impressions about the two events it is possible to say that the "Baltic Way" was remembering emotionally considerably more. This event became a reference point for evaluating a reality of the nowadays. In the impressions of John Paul II visit to Lithuania, the personal characteristics of the pope and details of his activity during the visit were dominating. [From the publication]
