ENAn inseparable part of Baroque is the occasional writings that flourished in the 17th c. These are texts written on a specific occasion: personal life events of a certain person (birth, wedding, funeral), or political, religious or social events of a state (war, truce, appointments to hold certain Positions). Occasional writings in Lithuania formed under two factors: manor and mansion environment with wellestablished customs and rituals and the flourishing art of rhetoric. Facts of daily life, works done and campaigns undertaken by noblemen were an inexhaustible source of topics for the creations of various genres, whose artistic expression greatly depended on the requirements of rhetoric. The popularity of occasional writings is best illustrated by a quantitative analysis of publications published in the16th-17th centuries. At the end of the 16 th c. Vilnius University printing house, which was an important establishment in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, printed 31 books on mundane topics. However, in the 17th c. the situation changed completely. The intensive teaching of rhetoric and different specificity of social life conditioned the copious publication of occasional writings - as many as 272 were published. In terms of genre, Baroque occasional writings not only retained ancient genres that had thrived during the Renaissance (threnus, epitaphs, epithalamias, eulogies), but also formed and developed new ones which earlier were not popular (elogiums). One of the most popular genres in the Baroque epoque was eulogy, which, despite following ancient form and topic, qualitatively was a totally novel phenomenon. The report covers eulogies of three eminent professors of Vilnius Academy: Sigismundus Lauxmin (1597-1670), Jan Rywocki (1599-1666) and Casimir Kojalowicz (1617 - 1674). The eulogies are dedicated to Władysław Vasa - the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania. The conditions of writing, topics and peculiarities of form of these creations are briefly discussed. Attention is paid to the picture of the hero, qualities and virtues attributed to him, as well as to the means of depiction. [From the publication]
