ENAfter the restoration of Lithuanian independence, the systematic research on towns and cities did not become a fundamental direction in Lithuanian humanitarian studies. The reduced government attention on the formation of the city environment led to the situation where a unified urban studies direction didn't form either in practice or on a theoretical level. Therefore, the scientific systems and the researching of cities and the city system structures became fragmented. The political and economic changes in the 1990s influenced the development of the whole country, leading to the whole Lithuanian urban system being unsettled. The planning of Lithuanian cities and towns was in the hands of the state up until 1990, but later it became the target for private investors' interest and interpretation. The problems of contemporary Lithuanian towns' and cities' environment are linked to the governments hesitation to take on the role of the main planner of urban systems. These problems have been publicized many times before, but never in the context of the urbanistics discourse problem. For a number of years now the professional publications have discussed the critical situation of Lithuanian urban policies, connected with the continuation of traditions of spatial city planning, in terms of the educating of architects-urban planners, and with the classification of research areas and studies. This discussion should be understood not just as a conflict between the concept and contents of official and unofficial urbanistics or as an indication of the discord between academia and professional architects, but as a positive move to give the questions of urbanistics a fresh opportunity of public discussion. Such field incites research into the problems of urbanistics, to reveal the main reasons for the crisis of the discourse and to predict possible future development of this occurrence.
