ENIn the 19th c., professor Rhesa of Königsberg University started publishing original Lithuanian literature. Through the press, he publicly applied to the educated society of Prussia with a request to send him Lithuanian manuscripts. The national cultural movement initiated by Rhesa remained active as long as Prussia itself existed, i.e. until the mid-20th c. In the period of 1818 to 1825, Rhesa published the following Lithuanian literary works: Donelaitis’ poem „The Seasons and six fables“, the poem „Pilkainis“ by Christian Gottlieb Mielcke, and a collection of Lithuanian songs. His edition of "The Seasons" is the first scientific effort to publish the poem. The publication included an article which contained Donelaitis’ biography, an overview of his literary work, and a literary analysis of the poem. Rhesa was the first to show the artistic and scientific value of "The Seasons". At the end of the publication, he added comments on the content and the language of the text. The publication received positive reviews from Goethe, Jakob Grimm, Abraham Penzel, and others. It is owing to Rhesa that the first Lithuanian author of fiction and his book were rescued from oblivion and came to the attention of educated public internationally. Rhesa also included Donelaitis’poem into the educational program of the Seminar for the Lithuanian Language. His archives contain unpublished shorter Lithuanian texts. [From the publication]
