Summary / Abstract:

ENThis text tries to contradict the stereotype existent among museum based art historians that the museum space lessen the sacrum value of the icon. The author of the text, backed by the ideas of Father Pavel Florensky, tries to establish the notion that the revelation of an icons sacrum in museum surroundings is possible depending on how well the aesthetic and artistic values of the icons, and where the sacrum value is based, are preserved during exhibiting the icon and other museum practises. In contradicting the stereotype that the museum space is "not suitable for the revelation of sacrum" the author tries to answer the following questions: What does the sacrum notion really mean? Can more than one kind of sacrum be identified? What kind of sacrum can the icon not represent in museum space? What hinders or obstructs the revelation of sacrum in the museum? What is a relation between sacrum with the related notion sanctum? In the search for answers, the author analyses the icons sacrum phenomenon in two aspects - metaphysical and semantic. Discussing the semantic aspect she examines two ways of revelation phenomenon of an icon's sacrum - depiction and participation (lith. dalyvumas, gr. metliexis).Employing the examples of actual exhibitions, the impediments to experience an icons sacrum in the museum space are uncovered. From the author's point of view the icon in a museum is in exile. Though, it has to be pointed that in the past museums became a shelter and saviour of icons. Icons in the museums seem to be an unavoidable occurrence. To make this process less painful and to preserve the icons' aesthetic and artistic value the icons have to be properly exhibited and this way the revelation and the rising of the sacrum above aesthetic and artistic values is possible. However, the revelation of Sanctum is impossible, as it requires appropriate spiritual surroundings, i.e. the church. A museum cannot provide such surroundings. [From the publication]
