ENDuring German occupation (1941-1944) Vilnius Radiophone broadcast many concerts and various musical programmes every day, with German and music by other foreign composers dominating concerts. However, the listeners could also hear music by Lithuanian composers, Lithuanian folk songs and dances. Juozas Naujalis' "Svajonė" (Dream), Juozas Gruodis "Rudenėlis" (Autumn), parts of Vladas Jakubėnas' Symphony No 2, Jurgis Karnavičius' ballet suite Barocco, Jonas Nabažas' symphonic poem, Julius Gaidelis' symphonic poem "Vilniaus legenda" (Vilnius Legend), Kazimieras Viktoras Banaitis' "Žygis į Vilnių" (March to Vilnius), Viktoras Kuprevičius' "Pajūriais" (In the Seaside), Bronius Jonušas' marches and vocal and instrumental music of other Lithuanian composers were performed at Radiophone concerts. Čiurlionis' music, programmes devoted to his life and creation were also broadcast by Vilnius Radiophone. In September 1941 Vilnius Radiophone broadcast Čiurlionis' "Keturios liaudies dainos simfoniniam orkestrui" (Four songs for symphony orchestra) that were instrumented by Stasys Užpolevičius, and in April and November 1943 - Čiurlionis' symphony poem "Miške" (In the Forest). Both compositions were performed by the Vilnius Radiophone symphony orchestra conducted by Jeronimas Kačinskas. The Vilnius Philharmonic Quartet performed Čiurlionis' String Quartet in С minor in September 1942. Stanisław Szpinalski played nine preludes and "Muzikos bruožai" (Music Features) from Čiurlionis piano compositions in September 1941, while in September and November 1942 he performed nine preludes. In October 1941 Ona Biržiškaitė performed Čiurlionis' two preludes in F minor and В minor. The lecture "Lietuvos gamta Čiurlionies tapyboje" (Nature in Čiurlionis' Paintings) delivered by Mikalojus Vorobjovas as well as the programme for young people "Pasikalbėjimas apie Čiurlionį" (Talking about Čiurlionis) were devoted to the composer's life and work. Both programmes were broadcast in March 1943; they were also aired by Kaunas Radiophone. The Vilnius radio programme log carried an entry made in December 1941 of Juozas Gaudrimas' lecture "Čiurlionis - didysis menininkas" (Čiurlionis is a Great Artist) although the text of the lecture has not been discovered either at the Lithuanian Central State Archive (coll. R-636) or at the Lithuanian Literature and Art Archive (coll. 120). The texts and scripts of some programmes about Čiurlionis and record books of the Vilnius radio programmes that have survived with entries of Čiurlionis' compositions broadcast during the Second World War are kept at the Lithuanian Central State Archive (coll. R-636). [From the publication]
